Assemble & Join – Lower Marsh install and new News

It was a pleasure to be back down in Lower Marsh again last week installing the bug boxes and bird houses made by the local community in the Assemble & Join shop earlier this year. We have now installed 25 Bird houses along Lower Marsh and in the surrounding area. Locations include, The Camel & Artichoke, The Walrus, our previous home at No.19, Waterloo Action Centre and Archbishops Park. We are currently putting a map together which will be on the A&J website soon with the location of each bird house, bug box and planter including the name of the maker who made that piece of now permanent public street furniture! Keep your eyes peeled.

Community Kite Project + Big Environment Day, Sheffield 04.05.2013 – 11-3pm

Really excited to confirm that Community Kite Project will be in residence at the Big Environment Day taking place at Heeley Millennium Park in Sheffield on the 4th of May. We will be based in The Institute Building next to the park where we will be making kites for free with anyone and everyone from 11-3pm and then hopefully getting some good flying action in too in the Millenium Park. Can’t wait! We look forward to seeing you there.

NOT ANOTHER BILL

This project has been a long time in the making but with some hard work, a pinch of luck and some perseverance it has finally happened. Ned contacted me around a year ago asking if I would be interested in making and edition of work for Not Another Bill, I of course said yes straight away. It has taken the rest of the year working out how I would be able to realise an edition of 700 items without loosing the core values that I aim to put into my work; Quality, Imagination & Hand-crafted with my own passion and soul in each piece. By using using the CNC router in-house at Assemble & Join, I was able to set up a micro-manufacturing slingshot making factory (well in my mind it was) to achieve a far larger output then with my usual one-off pieces or editions that are in the 10′s, 20′s and 30′s. Still 700 was a mammoth task. The signing/editioning alone took an entire day, cramp included! The Slingshot body is made from 12mm WISA-TWIN plywood (Birch faced, Spruce core), one of the few forward thinking plywood manufactures taking strides towards a more sustainable future. www.wisaplywood.com The pouches are made from leather off-cuts from the upholstery industry and the elastic is high grade silicone rubber tubing. With Ned/NAB’s wonderful packaging abilities, it all came together in the nick of time to make the post for the February send out.

Each slingshot is hand finished with it’s own unique design in one of 5 bespoke colours for Not Another Bill.

Assemble & Join Update – Crafts Magazine and More…

I made this last year.

Stone – 2012

It has been a brilliantly hectic last month or so at Assemble & Join. All the public workshops were booked up over a month in advance! We have been malleting and machining our way with the help of the local community to creating over 60 bird houses and 20 planters that will be placed outside local businesses to bring a bit more wildlife and colour to the street. Keep your eye out for them as we hope to start installing in the coming weeks.
